The third edition of this book provides detailed information about the silver reales “treasure” coins recovered from the 1622 fleet shipwrecks, including what the coins look like when first discovered, how they are cleaned, conserved, and graded, what they were worth in the 17th century, the meaning of the various markings, how to identify a coin’s mint of origin, and the names and periods of office of the assayers who were responsible for guaranteeing coins of legal weight and purity and whose initials were mandated to be stamped on them. This Third Edition significantly expands on the 2010 edition, with added back-stories on the founding of the minting houses, more historic images, and updated, comprehensive assayer information, including source citations.

Review

When I want to learn more about coins, I consult Carol Tedesco. For me as a student and teacher of archaeological oceanography, coins serve as indicators of lost ships, historic cultures as well as shifting sediments and ocean currents. This concise book has huge content including the mines, the mints, the assayers, conservation and preservation. --Clarice M. Yentsch, Ph.D.

Curator of Education for the Mel Fisher Maritime Historical Society and Museum from 2002 to 2007; Research Scientist & Adjunct Professor Oceanographic Center Nova Southeastern University Dania Beach, Florida

I m delighted to see this booklet on the 1622 coins excavated for many years from the Atocha and Margarita historic shipwrecks. Numismatists and general readers alike will delight in this well researched guide to an unparalleled archaeological collection recovered from the sea.
