Description:

SPAIN, gilt bronze medal, 1801, promotion for new method for striking coins by J.P. Droz, with original case.

Bramsen-187; Julius-1035; Vives-192; VQ-14.160. Obverse with conjoined busts of Charles IV and María Augusta inside legend UNION AUGUSTA, engraver's initials M.G.S. (Mariano González de Sepúlveda) at bottom; reverse with EVITANDO / EL FRAUDE / DILACION Y GASTOS / IDENTIFICA / LOS SIGLOS. within legend J.P. DROZ INVENTOR DEL METODO DE MULTIPLICAR LOS TROQUELES / *1801*; edge lettering ACUNA SUPERFICIE Y CANTO A UN SOLO GOLPE. This medal was struck to promote a new mintage method invented by Swiss medallist Jean-Pierre Droz (1746-1823), who was mintmaster in France and Great Britain, in which both sides and edge were struck simultaneously as a thwart for counterfeiting. His method was adopted by the Spanish mints in 1803. While somewhat common in bronze, gilt-bronze examples like this one are quite rare, more so with original case of issue.
