Description:

BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1651 O, with crowned-C, crowned-arms, and unidentified countermarks on cross (extremely rare with three countermarks), ex-Capitana, ex-Hudson, Mastalir Plate.

S-P35; KM-19b; Cal-1489. 18.80 grams. Solid and nicely toned VF despite thinning from corrosion, with choice full crown above shield, full cross with very deep (60%) countermark on bottom arm that caused an edge-crack there, weak (erased?) countermark in upper-left quadrant, and deep partial arms countermark at top edge with associated split and tiny bend.

From the Capitana (1654), pedigreed to Louis Hudson Collection (Sedwick Auction 6, lot 316), Plate Coin on page 60 of Mastalir's The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652.
