Description:
INDIA (British), Madras Presidency, massive clump of 450(+/-) English East India Co. copper X cash, 1808.
KM-139. 12.6 lb total. Roughly 9" x 7" x 5-½". A truly incredible and massive shipwreck clump that is a sight to behold, with numerous East India Company X cash coins scattered about its surfaces, many of which are darkened but with clear dates and design details visible. Even allowing for a generous 50/50 mix of coins versus other material, there are easily 450+ coins inside this clump. It appears to have been well preserved due to clustering around two iron cannonballs, whose curved impressions are quite evident. Additionally, the rusty orange matrix shows a portion of the wooden cask that the coins were stored in, as well as shards of glass here and there. Very impressive and certainly a trophy piece from this shipwreck.
Recovered from Admiral Gardner Shipwreck, sunk in 1809 southeast of England.
