Description:
MEXICO, Mexico City, ½ real, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer G between bottoms of pillars, mintmark M to left and M/F to right (oMo-oM/Fo), motto as PLV in right-leaning rhomboid panel with single annulets on either side, very rare, NGC VG details / environmental damage, ex-Sedwick-Downing, ex-Hubbard.
Nesmith-8 for type / 8; S-M2; Cal-42; KM-unl (6 for type). 1.36 grams. As with many ½ real coins, this one is not a perfect specimen, given its spotty toning, uneven strike and small areas of dark "horn" silver; however, it is the only NGC-certified example of oM/Fo, and in general they are not found in top condition, probably from many years of use. Assayer-G coins of this denomination with an over-assayer are very rare, with fewer than ten known. (NGC #8228456-015)
Pedigreed to the Clyde Hubbard Collection, with his tag, and to the Sedwick-Downing Collection of Mexican Charles-Joanna Coinage.
